The credits have rolled on The Talos Principle.

The Talos Principle is a first person puzzle game in the vein of Portal, Q.U.B.E, and probably Myst and Riven, but I’m not sure because I didn’t have a PC when Myst and Riven were popular. Still I feel I had to mention them here to avoid angry comments about my lack of knowledge of the first person puzzle genre.

The puzzles are the best kind of puzzles. Just a few mechanics to keep track of and each series of puzzles builds upon the rules of previous puzzles. It’s near puzzle perfection. Each solved puzzle rewards you with a tetromino-shaped sigil. Collect enough sigils and you advance in the game. But depending on which direction you choose advance, you’ll either suffer the wrath of or enjoy the praise of Elohim, the godlike narrative voice. Advance as Elohim commands, and you’ll be praised. Advance up the forbidden tower, and you’ll be chastised.

This choice in either defiance of or honor of a religious deity is where the game tries to be more than a game. But I’m not sure it succeeds. (more…)

Welcome to games over, the same show you’ve seen on other channels, reviewing some utter barrel bottom scum games, but I maintain a different version, a simpler concern for getting my thoughts out quick as the credits tick up, no time for deep thinking but this time I’m winking this eye because I’m trying to rhyme the entire time? Why? Just trying to find that absurd line between review channel mimicry and a gimmick we, you and me, can agree is worth a few views, a share perhaps, recommending what you’ve seen here, maybe fueled by beer, to between three and thirteen people even if you perceive me as an a-hole. Which is easy. This may be annoying. Sorry. (more…)

I finally got around to playing Axiom Verge. After all the praise and all the personal recommendations I felt it was time to finally give this a go (the game being the Cartridge Clube game of the month surely motivated me as well). Well, I’m glad I finally played it. This is one of the best side-scrolling retro games I’ve played in a long, long time. (more…)

The least creative thing to say after having played this game is that Human Fall Flat falls flat. And I’m mentally exhausted after playing the game, so that’s what I’ll say. Human Fall Flat falls flat. (more…)

Shadow of the Colossus by Nick Suttner from Boss Fight Books is a play-by-play walkthrough of the game Shadow of the Colossus with personal anecdotes and developer correspondence interspersed throughout. It’s exactly that and nothing more. If that doesn’t sound interesting to you, then this book isn’t for you. If it does sound interesting to you–as it definitely does to me–then you will get a lot of enjoyment out of this book. (more…)

The credits have rolled on What Remains of Edith Finch. Here’s the set-up: a family curse causes every member but one of the Finch family to die in every generation. That left-alive person lives only long enough to keep the family lineage going for another cursed generation. You play as Edith Finch, this generation’s lone surviving member, as you return to your childhood home to learn more about the curse and to, perhaps, escape it. What Remains of Edith Finch is a walking simulator that delivers its story with variety and creativity without ever buckling under the weight of its heavy message. I’ll be reeling from this one for a long time. This could very well be in my top 5 favorite games of all time. (more…)

I just started playing a little-known game called Skyrim. If you’ve heard of it, you are part of a special club. Join me, fellow club member as I spend a few moments during my morning commute to talk about the wonderful video game that is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

How good is Skyrim? Very. Seriously, though, is Skyrim really that good? Yes. Is Skyrim better than Fallout? Well, hold on. Don’t go crazy.
